Company Holiday Party Ideas in Washington DC (9 Options)

Nine holiday party ideas for DC offices, and the booking timings that decide whether you get the venue you want.

The Washington skyline

The DC holiday party has a scheduling problem before it has any other kind. Congress goes out in December, associations run their year-end board meetings, and half your staff take the week before Christmas. The window is narrower than it looks — realistically the first two weeks of December, and everybody else has worked that out too.

Nine options, and what each one costs you in flexibility.

1. A hosted murder mystery at your venue

Ours. It is first because it is the only one here that fixes the actual problem with office holiday parties, which is that people sit with their own team and leave at nine. Everyone gets a character and has to talk to people they do not normally talk to.

We come to you, so you are not competing for a restaurant on the busiest fortnight of its year. A conference room, an office floor with the desks pushed back, or a space you have already booked all work.

2. A restaurant buyout

Reliable and easy to sell internally. Book it in September for December; by late October the good rooms downtown are gone. Cost is per head and climbs quickly once you add a bar.

3. A hotel ballroom

Right for a large headcount and formal enough for an association's board. Expensive, and the room is so big that people cluster — you have solved capacity and created distance.

4. A private room at a museum or historic building

DC has more of these than any comparable city and they are a genuine draw for guests. Long lead times, strict rules about catering and decor, and the venue often runs the evening more than you do.

5. A holiday market outing

Downtown Holiday Market at Penn Quarter is pleasant, free and completely undirected. Nice as an add-on, not an event.

6. A daytime lunch instead

Underrated in this city. Attendance is dramatically better than an evening event when a third of your team commutes from Virginia, and it costs a fraction. It is also over in ninety minutes, which is either the drawback or the appeal.

7. A cocktail-making class

Good for twenty to thirty. Everyone has something to do, which fills the awkward first half hour. Excludes non-drinkers unless the venue is thoughtful about it.

8. Bowling or an arcade bar

Casual and cheap and works for a young team. Loud enough that conversation is limited, which for some offices is a feature.

9. Charitable giving as the event

Lands especially well in a nonprofit or mission-driven office. As with volunteering, it is worthwhile but it is parallel activity rather than shared activity.

Book earlier than you think

Anything needing a venue in December should be settled by the end of September in Washington. We ask for around 45 days, which in practice means the useful time to look at December is early October at the latest.

If you want the party where people actually mix rather than sit with their own department, We bring the host, the storyline and every piece of the game to your venue, and we ask for about 45 days so it can be staffed and prepared properly. Pricing and availability shows what your guest count works out to, you can book a date directly, and the contact page reaches a person if you would rather talk it through first.
