Charleston is a wonderful reunion city and a demanding one. The historic peninsula is a walking city with uneven pavements and serious summer humidity, which is hard on older relatives — and most reunions happen in summer.
1. A hosted murder mystery
Ours, and first because it is the evening that includes everybody — indoors, air-conditioned, no walking, and playable by every age.
We come to wherever the family is — a rental house, a church hall, a community room.
2. A beach day at Folly or Isle of Palms
Genuinely lovely. Go early, take shade, and plan the parking properly.
3. An oyster roast or low country boil
The best shared family meal in the region. Everyone at the same table doing the same thing.
4. A carriage tour rather than a walking tour
The single best adjustment you can make for a mixed-age family here — same history, no walking.
5. A plantation or garden visit
Shaded, spread out and there is usually somewhere to sit. Middleton and Magnolia both work.
6. A big group dinner in a private room
Worth doing once and the food justifies it. Off-peninsula for price and parking.
7. A family quiz or talent show
Free, and usually the older generation's favourite. Someone has to run it.
